The War Memorial Park was opened in July 1921 as a tribute to Coventrians who died between 1914 and 1918 fighting in the First World War. The plans to introduce charges into the Car Parks are being proposed as part of the on-going budget process, due before Councillors in February. Local Councillors have expressed concern over the charges, insisting that they will encourage further on-street parking in residential roads, exacerbating an already significant problem in streets surrounding the park.

Commenting on these proposals the Leader of Coventry Conservatives, Councillor Ken Taylor, whose Earlsdon Ward includes the park, said: "Parking charges at the park will further increase major problems local residents have with on-street parking. It is not a sensible suggestion to charge people for visiting the War Memorial Park which is Coventry

Conservatives To Honour Green Belt Pledge

Cllr Ken Taylor, Leader of Coventry Conservatives, has confirmed that Conservative Councillors will honour their election pledge to protect Coventry’s Greenbelt by voting to scrap the current Coventry Core Strategy that detailed how the housing numbers demanded by the previous Labour Government could be delivered.

This follows a motion passed by the previous Conservative Council in December 2009 that stated that Coventry could accommodate 22,760 on Brownfield land and that at the moment there was no case to support building on greenbelt land in Coventry or the surrounding area. A Planning Inspector is due to report any day on their conclusions in relation to the current Coventry Core Strategy following a public examination earlier this year. Their conclusions are then likely to be voted on by Councillors at a Full Council meeting in June.

Coventry Denies Eco Town Interest

The CLG (Communities and Local Government) put out a press release yesterday announcing Coventry is interested in building an eco town.

Councillor Gary Ridley, Cabinet Member for City Development, said:

"This announcement came as a surprise given the reference to an eco town project. We have been very clear as a council that green belt development to meet the numbers of homes allocated to the city in the Regional Spatial Strategy(RSS) would only be allowed after all suitable brown field sites have been exhausted. This is reinforced by the phasing requirements in the draft Core Strategy currently being reviewed by a Government inspector

"This offer of funding is based on the Government wishing green belt land to be released prior to the completion of the phases of our core strategy relating to brown field development and regeneration projects. The Council believes this is not in the best interest of Coventry and will therefore be declining to take part in the second wave of eco towns and will be informing Government Office West Midlands(GOWM) of its intent."

Cllr Ken Taylor is pleased to announce that the Cathedral Lanes canopy built over the city's iconic statue of Lady Godiva and owned by St Martins Property Company will be removed over the next two weeks.

The removal comes less than a year since the massive consultation exercise held with Coventry people about the future of the city centre put the canopy top of the list of local peoples' pet hates in the city centre.

Coventry schools are being urged to have their say on the GBP1 billion plans to transform the city centre.

An ambitious masterplan, drawn up by architects The Jerde Partnership following widespread consultation by Coventry City Council earlier this year, was revealed last month. The plans include green parks and open spaces on top of new shops, a waterway following the path of the river Sherbourne with a new library at the heart of the groundbreaking design.

More than 1,000 people have already shared their views on the ambitious plans in the first two weeks alone, but now the Council is targeting Coventry's youngsters in a bid to get their ideas.

More than 300 people have already joined the Council's group to discuss the city centre on social networking site Facebook, and information packs and activities on how pupils can get involved have been sent to all 89 primary and primary special schools across the city and the 22 secondary and secondary special schools.
